ABOUT MEMy family is avid foodies. I've grown up with a mother who cooks almost every night. We rarely ate out. Some of her experiments were totally success, like her spicy lamb on hummus. Others, not so much, like boysenberry stroganoff. But, we always had to try it. If we didn't like it we didn't have to eat it, but this mantra meant I got to try a lot of dishes I wouldn't have otherwise. Sushi was probably the biggest challenge, as the idea of anything "raw" when I was a kid was "gross". My dad probably lamented exposing me to sushi, as it was what I would ask for on special occasions. I still crave it all the time, and it's still one of the only things I do not make for myself.
Since I never married and had kids of my own, cooking for myself always seemed a chore. I still loved to bake, but only when I could give it to someone else. I sure didn't need to eat an entire triple-creme cheesecake on my own. I cooked occasionally, but mostly simple meals like roast chicken breast with a side of steamed broccoli. Making anything "gourmet" was too much work when I got home at night. This year I challenged myself to do something different, and I have loved the results. I hope you will as well.
